Look of the Day

This look popped in my head when I received a group message from Lyra Muse that she had some limited in time boots out at Last Call. They are very holidayish… with the white fur trim (the boots come in green, black and silver too) so I wanted to pair them with a slightly more day to day look.. after all.. we’re getting close, but it ain’t X-mas yet. Last week when I found the scarf and waistcloth at Creamshop, I just HAD to have them, but until now they were idling in my inventory. I think they are doing really well together, the boots and the plaids.

Look of the Day

I have been cold for days now, despite central heating and thick cuddly sweaters, I am just feeling cold. So that reflects in my SL and I am wearing quite wintery outfits lately. Besides, when everyone is putting out christmas decorations, I just think shorts and a t-shirt look ridiculous. Err.. on second thought.. that only goes for the northern hemisphere…. I don’t blame the antipods for celebrating xmas in their swimwear

  • Brown Pea coat by Donmai Frederick @ Back and Forth priced MORE than reasonable at only L$ 98
  • Hanna high waisted skirt (pants and prim skirt only) by Antonia Marat @ Artilleri, L$ 120

Je Me Souviens Trop Bien

Je me souviens trop bien… I remember too well… I remember too well your warm and witty personality, the talks we had while you were working on the Unique gown for Relay for life and how you told me you felt blessed to be able to give an extra bit to this charitable cause by creating something truly unique in SL.
I remember too well the fascination you had for France and french things, how you loved to live there. Oddly enough just as I learned about you passing away, I was litteraly leaving for Paris. Right now I am sitting in this small hotel in the middle of the Marais and it is so strange to walk through this city we both know and love so much, seeing the things that you have seen and knowing that when I come back tomorrow, I will not be able to share stories with you.

I am extending my heartfelt condolences to your family and friends and most of all to your love, who will have to deal with living without you in a home that is still breathing you. I wish them strentgh, and love, and the ability to turn their memories in a healing power.

Je me souviens trop bien.. mon ami, I will miss you.

Some companies just don’t get internet advertising and just copy their print ads on the web… others do, like the dutch retailer HEMA. Check the link, it’s hilarious. Thx Caroline Apollo for posting it first.

Pose Making Addiction

Yep.. the virus has hit me hard…. feverishly manipulating the 3D figurine to make more and better poses whenever I have a spare moment, the result being this first set that I am not totally afraid of showing to you (all 3 of you). And no, the pose I posted this morning is not in this set. I need to work some more on it and it will be in a next series of poses.

Please Be Seated

Yours truly has been one lazy blogger lately, but that is because I have been spending quite some time making poses. Yeah that’s right… poses. I wanted to have some special ones for special outfits and I could not find them, so I finally decided to make them myself and it is totally taking me. It is so much fun. I have promised myself to do some reading to find out how animations work so that I can make a start with those too. And I do need to read things about it.. the few attempts I did without any back ground info really suck. Anyway, this pose I made earlier today and I really like how it has turned out.

Look of the Day

Happy anniversary to the Calla Ladies, Tigerlily Koi and Haedon Quine. I was over at their group preview party and grabbed some of their latest hairstyles. It was a fun, laid back afternoon with some of the most ardent Calla fans present. I am not hard core Calla… but I have always loved their work. My first “real” hair was Calla. So while I was checking out Lucerne, this outfit was kinda “born”. Roslin by Dakota Buck is one of the most stylish outfits available on the grid. I made the grey one slightly darker and paired it with the lovely Poet Blouse. To be able to wear both Fallingwater Cellardoor’s necklace and the neck ruffle of the blouse, I reattached the ruffle to the spine and adjusted it. Speaking of Fally… that new set she has out is truly awesome. With a click on the jewelry a menu appears and you can choose of 11 different gems for your set. Shoes and Skin are Tête à Pied’s. I love the meticulous prim work from CJ Carnot on these shoes. Mind you.. these are traditional prims, not sculpties and the skin.. do I really have to explain why I like it so much? It’s just delicious… the deep smokey eyes. Inspired after Shai Delacroix’ recent lingerie creation binge, but I just love it with real clothes on too.

Dress: Savvy? – Roslin in grey (tinted for a blacker look)
Blouse: Adam ‘n Eve – White Poet Blouse
Stockings: Down Undies – Fishnet stockings
Shoes: Tête à Pied – Black Mary Janes

Jewelry: Shiny Things – Nighttime Gems

Hair: Calla – Lucerne in Black
Skin: Tête à Pied – Vivant Buff Boudoir 2

Armani Opens in SL….

About 3 months ago I spotted an empty sim called Armani Via Manzoni. Exited by the idea of a famous RL designer making the transition to SL I contacted the company who was helping Armani to get introduced to the grid, but I did not get any confirmation, or any other news for that matter.

So after a while I got bored with it. I could have thrown it on the blog back then. after all, the sim was there, and the secretive ways around it made me pretty confident it was indeed Armani SpA that was involved it this. So after another friendly request and another non answer, I contacted the RL Armani press office. At least a friendly lady there confirmed me that indeed Armani was building the SL version of their flagship store in Via Manzoni, Milano and that within a few weeks the work should be ready. She also kindly requested NOT to write about it at that very time, but to give the builders and the content creators the time they needed to deliver something state of the art.
When I received an invitation that the sim was opened I dropped all the prims I had rezzed and rushed over to state of the art Armani, only to find myself desillusioned, annoyed even. Oh the architecture is nice, but it sure is not a great builder that has been at work there. Yeah they do have toilets. How silly can you be… no av ever needs to go to the restroom unless… oh well.. I don’t even want to go there. The shop is full with a bit awkwardly sculpted clothes, which are not for sale and did I mention, as empty as it was, the place was laggy as hell?
Finally in a hidden corner of the huge shop I found like 15 vendors and a couple of other avatars standing in front of it. I put myself next to them … oh my…. what were they thinking…. a suit, a dress, a couple of t-shits, a bag , a pair of shoes and some shades….. no details or shading on the textures, basic snapshots for ads hmm.. to put it short… what a desillusion.

After a while Mr Armani himself made an appearance and I asked him about the merchandise and if he himself had be involved in the process. As if he felt what direction I was heading he stated that, unfortunately the limits of content creating are set by the limits of technology. Well.. I think that was actually quite flattering. My honest opinion is, and that is what I told mr Armani as well, that in this case the limits of content creating were set by the limits of the creator, because the limits of the software were not met by a long shot.
Obviously, although I doubt the real mr Armani would have been this rude and unable to deal with the press, the typist handling mr Armani’s avatar did not really know how to deal with criticism and poofed, mumbling something that unfotunately he thought it was time to leave and poofed.
So far so good for an introduction of one of the world’s best designers in SL. one of the other girls present mentioned another Americam Apparel situation and I think it is true, Armani doe snot take SL seriously, does not involve the community and is likely to fail in the metaverse. Yet another example of how Second Life requires new and innovative marketing techniques and how even SL companies that pretend to help RL companies with their coming to SL do under estimate that.

Models

I do some occasional modeling. Well, more than occasional really. After all, I am my own model for Second Style, and sometimes I work with some friends/photographers on a shoot.

What I don’t get is the attraction that people have to become a fashion model in SL. Probably I am being naive, it is more than likely the same fascination RL girls have with the apparently glamorous modeling scene. Get up close and personal with the big designers, the hot photographers and the VIP’s on after parties. It seems that modeling agencies are the new casinos in SL. They are booming in numbers, but only a few are really working.

Anyways, since a lot of residents aspire a modeling career in SL, let me ad my 2 cts to the hype and give you some tips.

  • Don’t IM me to model on Second Style blog. Celebrity has a pool of Second Style models that she works with for shoots for the mag and for events. If you want to work with us, contact her.
  • Invest in a good portfolio, shot by a good photographer that shows you in a variety of looks, showing how versatile you are.
  • When picking an agency, be critical. Inform yourself about their customers. Do they just offer models, or do they also produce events, what possibilties they offer for exposure etc., etc. And also…. are you required to serve as an entourage for non fashion related events and so on (and are you willing to do that?)
  • Invest in skins and hair. A possible client will want you to have the look he/she is looking for. An aspiring model once said to me that if a client would want her to change looks, the client would have to provide the means for that. It’s just not working like that. It won;t get you gigs. There are, just like in RL, at least 10 others after that job, you really cannot afford an attitude.
  • Which brings me to maybe the most important asset for a model, her personality. Be humble, friendly, punctual. An attitude may look good in a photo, but a model that has one is hell to work with.
  • Shop for good poses and learn how to assemble your own AO. Using a customised AO will make you stand out. Leave typical “model”poses out of your day to day AO. Those are runway poses or camera poses. It’s so ridiculous when you are talking to a model and oops.. there go her arms up in the air… armpit check?
  • Learn how to deal with rejection. As in RL, you will most certainly not be the only candidate for a job. If you do not get it, it is likely that you do not have the exact look the client is looking for for THAT job, it does not mean you are no good as a model. However, if you are at a public casting and you notice that everyone looks like your twin… it may be time to change your look and make yourself a bit more exclusive.
  • Don’t expect to get rich. Modeling is not a well paid job. If you’re in it for the money, become a dancer in a club. Usually models work for photos and the clothes they get to wear. If you are very lucky you will earn a little money. But that is more likely for a runway show that will take several hours of hard work.
  • Speaking of runways, lag reducing is the key. Just some quickie tips: prior to a runway job, delete all applications you don’t need from your computer, as well as big files, bitmaps etc. Delete your cookies and browser history. Defragment your computer. When you reboot your computer after that, when logging onto SL, from the login screen, open preferences and in network clear your cache and web cache. In Graphics Detail put all the mesh sliders down and switch to sun and moon only. You will look like crap to yourself, but honestly, your client won’t care less about your SL experience. The public will want to see a model that walks down the runway, not one that lags off the grid. Set your draw distance to 64. You will notice that applying these things will reduce lag big time.

Still interested? Well.. in that case I wish you tenacity … and good luck!

By Popular Demand….

…Although I doubt a lot of people will read it.

I am being asked more and more about the outfits I wear. Whereas for Second Style I blog mainly the products as the designer makes them, I do like to mix and match and wear things from different designers and create something new. So after another shopping spree where at least 10 people asked me about what I was wearing, voilà here it is:

Clothes:
Sweater: Nyte ‘n Day – Rococo in white
Skirt: Sand Shack Surf Co. – Plaid Skirt Classic
Sash: Karamia – Black Wrap Dress
Stockings: Tete à Pied – Opaque Tights Scarlet
Shoes: Tesla – Jane Night
Accessories:
Jewelry: Earthtones Boutique – Juliette
Body:
Hair: ETD – Deirdra in Smoke Burnt
Skin: Artilleri – Rawr in Sunkiss

Fun

Just before I left for my holiday, my friend NIcky Ree asked if I was willing to model with her for her Kelly gowns. Ofcourse I accepted, and was all the more pleasantly surprised when I learned that marvelous black & white photographer Carl Crabe would be shooting.

I had a great time, and I am looking forward to work with both Nicky and Carl again. They both are great fun to be with.

LL Scares Me Again

From the official Linden Blog:

As announced earlier, Second life is being taken down for scheduled maintenance on Wednesday, August 22, 08:00am SLT (PDT) (15:00 GMT).

[Updated 10:40] The bulk of the work is done. We are performing internal testing now. One issue has been identified and is being investigated.

[Updated 11:00] First set of issues is resolved, but a new one has been discovered and is being worked on now. Once this is resolved, we need to complete additional testing prior to opening up the grid. We expect this to be completed by 11:30.

so far so good.. but then:

[Updated 11:25] The new issue has been resolved, but deploying the fix and subsequent testing will take some additional time. We now expect the grid to open by 12:00

[Updated 12:15] We have completed deployment for the fix and are continuing testing.

ok.. better safe than sorry… after all.. Maintenance Wednesday has more than once turned into a general nightmare…..but wait… there is more:

[Updated 12:45] We have identified another problem, resolved it and deployed the fix. We are again testing prior to opening up.

[Updated 13:05] We have identified yet another issue which would affect inworld email delivery. We are currently fixing it and resuming testing.

How much more issues are going to be discovered prior to the grid being brought back up…? is this the point where they are going to fix EVERYTHING before putting the grid back up? Keep searching guys and you will find many more issues, work for weeks of downtime.

What I am really afraid of though is that many new issues will be discovered… by residents.. after finally being able to log back in. I think I might not wait up for it and tuck in early. Ciao!

and we went out with a bang! More that 32 million L$ were raised this year, which is a smashing success.Money that will be used for cacer research, for supporting people who are fighting cancer, their relatives and care givers. Not only in RL, but also the SL community will benefit from this with a permanent presence of th ACS in Second Life.

I would like to thank my Shopaholics team members for all their efforts and support that has lead to us being the 4th team in raising funds this year. Not bad for a bunch of first timers!

But I also would like to thank all our fellow fundraisers, from all other teams, as well as all the content creators who have been so kind to make special things of which all proceeds went to RFL. And ofcourse the people who have worked so hard behind the scenes to make this all possible, the SLRFL committee, the designers, the scripters, the angels who were always there to support the teams and answer our questions.

A special thank you for Fayandria Foley, the SLRFL chairperson. Without you Fay, your never ending enthusiasm and dedication, your hard work, and your inspiring personality, SLRFL just would not have been the wonderful experience that is was.

On the day after I am full of mixed emotions. I am glad that is it over, from February til the end of July is a huge time to commit to something in SL. I am also sad that it is over, because we all had so much fun during the campaign. I am glad because I have met a lot of really great people through Relay for Life, and it saddens me to know that some of them by the time next edition starts, will not be with us anymore.

The fight is not over, it will never be unless scientists do find a cure for this disease that comes in so many forms. So, I am looking forward to RFL 2008 and to all the beautiful things that will happen in between. Thank you all for letting me be part of it.

Back in December I was so happy I could lay my hands on some of Dazzle’s last limited editions that Ginny released around the holidays. They still are among my all time inventory favourites. I was thrilled to see that a new limited from Ginny’s magic hads was about to be released and got all geared up (in casu… stripped naked, no hair, no nothing), ready to face what was about to be a fashionista nightmare over at Last Call. Ginny has over 1000 fans in her update group and only 75 gowns available. The only attachment I was seriously considering was a push gun to shoot everyone of the premises, if I had one, but on second thought, I really like Ginny, and I would hate being banned off the sim.

Anyway, almost immediately after the notice that the Sea Nymph was released… the first batch was gone. Ginny herself was impressed by the incredible amount of people camping outside

.**RE-EDIT: The Sea Nymph is officially gone and out of rotation. I apologize profusely for the lag. I had no clue how many people had camped out inside of the store. The dots on the minimap didn’t reveal themselves until I expanded the map and saw a pancake stack 35 high with 18 more stuck at the entrance to the store (me being one of the 18). Remember the hair is limited release and will be in my store and at ETD until July 31st. It’s SO gorgeous. We have a WONDERFUL release planned for next week – an extensive MEN’S AND WOMEN’S release along with exciting news about new projects, new collaborations, new stores, and new builds ❤ Have a wonderful weekend!!!! <3<3

Second Batch which was released in the early SL evening… same story, within a couple of hours all 75 items were gone, and a lot of people were disappointed. I must admit, I did not expect this to happen. Wit the last Dazzle limiteds, that were only 60, after a couple of days, there were still some available.

I can’t wait to see the hype that will rock SL next time Ginny releases a limited edition.

Elika made the hair to go with the Sea Nymph, 2 versions of it and a bunch of awesome special textures. This hair is also limited, but in time, not in numbers. It is available until July 31. I usually am not a Willow Pack fan, but in this case I could not resist it, and I even might go for the other pack too.

Hehehe, since Second Style is off the air for a couple of days, and I am addicted to blogging fashion, this has become quite a fashion post.
