Vintage… or not

fashion LOTD

While walking around and enjoying all the amazing work which is out on the Vintage Fair (open to the public on November 11, 4 PM SLT), I was thinking about what “vintage” actually is and I found this definition  on vintage actually pretty helpful:

The term vintage is used to describe clothing between 20 and 100* years old which is clearly representitive of the era in which it was produced. Vintage clothing can be used, new (from dead stock), manufactured, and handmade. It is important to understand that the definition of vintage is fluid, so every decade brings forth new items as “vintage”. It is also important to understand that all vintage will eventually become antique. (Clothing 100 years old or more is classified as antique)

Basically, vintage furniture is furniture that is between 30 to 100 years old. Furniture that is older than 100 years is termed antique. Anything more recent would qualify as simply used furniture. A very popular vintage look is Mid-Century Modern.

On that account, I skipped anything which qualified as pre- twentieth century, but you will find quite a nifty selection of Marie Anoinette-ish and Victorian items as well, so if that is what you like, you should definitely also visit the fair.

For me, the 3 looks above absolutely qualify as vintage looks. I shot all pics in Funky Junk’s new Pasadena house which is the epitome of vintage with all kinds of flowery wall papers!! Great job, Ulaa!

  1. I’ve always thought of fashions from the 1950s-1980s as “Retro,” and everything before that as “Vintage.” But I have no idea where I go that 🙂
