A reader commented that she felt cheated because I edit the pics on my blog, that in reality the textures looked all wrong and not looking alive. I am actually glad she commented this because truth is… I do… sometimes, edit pics that are featured on my blog. Like yesterday when I bloggged the Mercy shoes from Orange Creations, but I think you’d have to be blind not to realise it is edited.

What I never edit though are my LOTD pictures, other than that I crop them and add a border. I simply lack the PS skills to edit all my pics (it would take WAY too much time, and suck the fun right out of me) and besides, I think that products featured should reflect the actual quality as much as possible.

So to illustrate how I work when I take pictures, here is… a picture:

Yes, it’s cropped, I added a border and.. omg.. letters!!  😀 Lets go through it, ok? NB: I take all my pictures running SL in the official LL 2.0 viewer on ultra settings.

A) in my studio, which isn’t more than a rounded white wall, with default mid day light settings. No other in world lights for funky effects.

B) in the same studio, but now with the WL settings provided by Caliah Lyon. You can see the massive difference, the textures in general looking way more vibrant

C) still the same studio with Caliah’s settings, but here I have added a 0.02 glow to the white wall behind me. The effect is that there seems to be a light shining through and the av’s edges get smoothed a wee bit.

C is how I take 99, 9% of my pics. So, yeah, that’s my secret. No editing, but making use of the in world tools that every resident has (provided they have a decent computer and can run more than basic shaders).  It’s not my intention to make my readers feel cheated, ever. But I don’t think using in world tools for photography  can ever be considered cheating. However. In the rare occasion that I will use an edited image, from now on, I will mention it.

[UPDATE 100531]  since many have let me know how much they appreciate these little tricks, I figured, I’d add a little bit more about the technicalities of  taking photo’s in world. Tips:

  1. Make sure that taking high resolution photos is enabled (open advanced menu -ctrl+alt+D- and check high res photos);
  2. Antialiasing is set on 8x (open preferences>graphics>hardware and set to 8x. I find 16x not working better for me, but maybe that depends on the system you have running, so play a little with that). Antialiasing wil make the image look smoother;
  3. Take your photos as a bitmap (JPEG and PNG will lessen the quality in my opinion)
  4. Take your photos as big as your system will support. For me, it’s ” safe” to take photos at 4000 x 4000. Anything higher will likely crash me in the process. This will leave you enough possibilities for cropping your image, and make it smaller so the image will look sharper.

Alirium Garden is one of those magical places, beautifully landscaped with the plants from the little shop in the little cottage and full of little, surprising corners with garden poses from SLC.

While picking up some hair at Love Soul yesterday, I noticed there was an adorable white/green living room with kitchen in the build, which would be an awesome set for some pics. Then I decided to explore the sim some, and discovered some other pretty corners, like a beautiful pond in a meadow, surrounded by trees, very peaceful… it’s really nice to take time to visit places, not just race in and out to pick up the items I need.

Go to the Explore! page for more pics from Love Soul and a SLurl to visit.

Artis Natur  is a lovely place to visit and take pics. It changes with the seasons and right now it’s in spring splendor.  Trees and flowers made by Sachi Vixen of Adam ‘n Eve. She makes her treests look like they are straight from an impressionist painting, it’s REALLY gorgeous.

SLurls to Artis Natur and other places worth visiting as well as links to more photos can be found on the Explore! page

The Northern German isle of Sylt has a SL version called Syltopia. The builders have managed to capture the distinctive caped shoreline and the beautiful low tide on this sim. Certainly worth a visit.

New page with places at Graziasl.com, originally uploaded by Grazia Horwitz.

I’ve added a new page with some pics of locations in SL which I thnk are worth exploring. There isn’t much there right now, but I will expand this section shortly, and if you have any tips to be included in this ever growing list, please feel free to send me an e-mail (graziahorwitz[at]gmail[dot]com) with a slurl or leave me a notecard with LM in world.

I plan to add maturity rating and whether or not you can (temporarily) rez objects for photoshoots and such.

Abby Cole, originally uploaded by Grazia Horwitz.

I like how the Abyss does not create skin, but Identities… and indeed, all their skins have very distinct characters. Abby Cole is portrayed as Teacher’s pet by her creator, but for me she’s also a delicious farm girl, so that’s how I decided to portray her. The fact that I’m spending a lot of time landscaping Leek Island is probably also part of my current country life fascination.

Anyway. I think Abby Cole has a delicious face. But like most skins at The Abyss the skin absolutely has issues. Seams, smudges… they’re all there. Also at 1400 L$ for a single skin, The Abyss is absolutely one of the more expensive skin shops. But what can I say, I’m a sucker for a sweet face.

Abby Cole comes in 2 skintones and is a natural red head, but the lighter browns will work very well on her. I’m wearing Tiny Bird’s Ring of Fire (ginger) and Surf Couture’s “I’m a little bit coutry” in Mossy Creek.

SLurls, as usual, can be found here

Rodd, originally uploaded by Grazia Horwitz.

I was talking with Iki earlier, and how I liked seeing her male skins getting quite a bit of attention. On the various shapes on the blogs, They all look very boyish, and almost androgynous, but I wanted to show that, especially Rodd, can look very masculine indeed.

Dutch Touch male skins come with and without a hair base and with and without chest hair. A copy/mod shape is included to help the guys getting started to personalize the skin.

Other need to knows: he’s wearing the wool blue peacoat from Coco and black knit cap, also from Coco (Homme). The cig is from FNKY.

As usual, you can find slurls here

PS: did you know you can subscribe to this blog via e-mail? Check out the side bar, leave your email address and be the first to be informed when I update.

Thomas, originally uploaded by Grazia Horwitz.

I like taking portraits and it’s something I’d like to do more often.
When Tricky Boucher from Belleza sent out a group gift of his latest skin Thomas, it tickled me to update my guy shape and take some pics. I think he’s hot, if I may say so myself.

NO H8, originally uploaded by Grazia Horwitz.

On day two of the BBBC 2009 i’d like to address the NO H8 campaign. I am Dutch and live near Amsterdam. To some of you that may seem like I live in the ultimate free state, citizen of the suburbs of Sodom & Gomorra. But it’s  not that bad, really… we’re more conservative than you might think.

Yes we have registered partnerships… open to both opposite and same sex couples (it’s a purely legal alternative to marriage, which is being considered having a religious component, and will give partners the same legal benefits as married couples) and I think it is a good thing. Why should same sex couples who want to commit to eachother and take care of eachother, just like hetero sexual couples, have less legal possibilities to do so? With mr. Horwitz, I can make him my heir and he’ll be elligible for a part of my pension plan should something happen to me and he has to go on alone.. but if mr Horwitz were a ms Horwitz… I should not be able to appoint her as my heir and partner on my pension plan? Would my love and my responsibility for my significant other be worth less?

And yet… even here in my liberal mini country there are narrow minded people who have a “not in my back yard” attitude towards same sex registered partners. Last year, in my town council, we had quite a fierce discussion between the confessionals and conservatives on one side and the liberals and social democrats to the other. NO… the confessionals were not against the same sex partnerships… everyone should have the right to form a formal bond… after all, that’s the law… but… the offical who would have to close such bond, who would conduct the ceremonial aspect of the registration .. he/she should have the liberty to refuse to do so if their personal beliefs were opposed to same sex couples.

It made me angry and sad. Should I want to be a teacher at elementary school… I can’t say I’ll teach Dutch and History, but I won’t teach children how to write…. That is an essential part of the job as a teacher. If you want to be a wedding official, you can’t choose that some couples you will “marry” and others you won’t. Aside fromt he fact that I think you shouldn’t even want to become a wedding official if you have issues with same sex couples, the whole discussion is ridiculous… and yet so very real.

So the NO H8 campaign, it may be an initiative to protest against proposition 8… but as far as I am concerned, it’s not limited to that. There are so many couples same sex and opposite sex who deeply love eachother, and care for eachoter. And if you truly believe that all men are created equal… then we all should have the same rights and access to social institutions.
